Week 8 PD 2

I enjoyed this weeks readings.  I think these chapters have been the most helpful for me.  It seems to be exactly what my teachers are wanting according to the survey I conducted.

I really liked the idea of the lesson study.  I thought the chapter explained it in good detail.  I am considering using this for my PD plan.  My survey indicated my teachers wanted to observe a teacher as their primary way of attending PD.  I think the lesson study would give them ownership of the material.  They could come up with their own ideas and collaborate on ways to implement the ideas.

My survey also indicated that the teachers I surveyed would attend a large group with small group discussion PD.  I have been thinking of using a faculty meeting setting to introduce the idea of lesson study to my teachers.  This way we could, as a group,  discuss what a lesson study is and how to implement.

What do you think about having a faculty meeting and then doing a lesson study as my PD plan?  Is this the right direction of task 2?

  1. I think you're in the right direction. Hope so, 'cause I'm right there with you! :) Erin & I were talking about how to break down Tasks 2 & 3. I think Task 2 is your overall plan and Task 3 is the PD you develop in detail. What do you think?

I really like the lesson plan strategy. From your survey results it sounds like something your teachers would really respond to. Are you going to guide them in a certain direction or give them free reign to choose their topic?

    1. My idea is to let them decide as a grade level, since they will probably benefit more watching their grade. I'm hoping they can all collaborate and it would work out on deciding a topic. Based on the 4 top choice based on the survey, I'd let me pick from those choices.

Thanks on the feedback on the tasks.

    3. Kaitlin, I think having them collaborate and decide is a great idea. I'm excited to hear about the result.

  2. Just like Julie said, I think that you are on the right track. I really LOVE the idea of the lesson study. I would really enjoy collaborating with peers in this type of PD.

Do you know how you would break into a lesson study? Would you have several small groups?

    1. My idea is to start as a faculty meeting. They would learn what lesson study is and get a common language.

Then I would have them break into grade levels and decide their topic for the lesson study. My hopes would be they'd all agree haha! But if they don't, I'd love for this to be an on going practice. I think the chapter on lesson study said the school did this every three weeks. Maybe I read that wrong, but wow! That's a lot of subs. None the less, at least once a semester.

    2. Kaitlin, even if you could only implement lesson study once a semester I think it's still beneficial. It is so detailed and time consuming but I think it would also be a great experience. I know you mentioned above about having them collaborate and choose from their survey results. That's a great idea! They have choices but even those are focused.

  3. I think a lesson study is a great way to get a lot of information and share ideas and strategies with teachers. Not only are you trying out strategies, but collaboration in this is key too.

What would you cover in the faculty meeting?

That definitely is a lot of subs! But I think the outcome would outweigh the costs. Teachers could learn so much from a lesson study. I am definitely curious about it and how to get the teachers to get on board with it as well.

    1. I agree Jacqueline. Lots of subs, lots of planning, lots of time but so educational for teachers. I can't wait to hear how it goes.
